Tandwielen met dubbele steek lijken op tandwielen met \u00e9\u00e9n steek, maar de ketting grijpt alleen in de andere tanden. Dit betekent dat een tandwiel met dubbele steek precies hetzelfde aantal tanden heeft als een tandwiel met \u00e9\u00e9n steek, maar dat slechts 50 van de tanden in de ketting grijpen. Het belangrijkste verschil is dat tandwielen met dubbele steek kleiner zijn en een unieke steekcirkeldiameter hebben voor een optimale aangrijping.
